How is your posture?
Good posture is determined by our ability to hold our bodies upright against gravity. It involves training our bodies to stand, sit, lie, and walk in positions where there is a minimal amount of strain placed upon our spines. Good posture improves the physiologic function of our bodies, while improving our overall appearance.
To maintain proper posture, we need to have adequate muscle flexibility and strength, normal joint motion, and balanced-symmetrical postural muscles on both sides of our spines. In addition, we must recognize our postural habits at home and in the workplace and work to correct them, if necessary.
Our posture influences our daily lives in both positive and negative ways. Good posture demonstrates confidence, balance, pain free movement, and enhanced physiologic function of our bodies. Whereas, poor posture, causes additional stress to the body, spinal degeneration, as well as pain and discomfort. Simply correcting our postures can enhance the quality of our lives and boost our overall health.
The return on investment for better posture will be astounding in later years. We simply cannot afford to neglect our postural needs, especially when so much of our ability to function is riding on the quality of our postural alignment.
